12/05/2019- Big Brother Big Sister (Semester Wrap up)
Today, as I wrote my last blog posts for the semester, I thought about some of the things that I learned from this experience so far.
1.Do not be scared to step out of your comfort zone and do things that you’ve always wanted to, but never had the courage to. I think when I first enrolled in this class, I did not truly know the amount of work that went along with it, but without this class I do not think that I would have ever started Big Brother Big Sister. Even going into it, I had my doubts: what If my little didn’t like me, what if I didn’t lik…
12/04/2019- Big Brother Big Sister
Today was the holiday party at program, so there were plenty of holiday crafts and everyone was really in a festive mood. This week has honestly been the best week so far. Again, I had not been getting much sleep this week because I’ve been up late working on assignments, but I powered through and still went to bigs. I think that before people would talk about not being motivated to go and I didn’t really understand, but it is during these harder times that it is hard to go. In the end, it is always going that puts me in a better mood and encourages me to keep going. This week when I …

Today, it was interesting to see that my little was warming up to me a lot more. For most of the time we watched Tik Toks because she makes Tik Toks and she wanted to show me her Tik Toks. I found it extremely adorable how excited she got to show me and how proud she was. When she showed them to me, she would say things like “this is my favorite one, or this one is really good,” and I think the smile on her face as she showed them to me made me a lot more interested and our time together a lot more fun. Being completely honest, I wasn’t feeling the healthi…
Wednesday November 20th,
At my last shift for campus kitchen I worked on a lot of processing that would be used for later shifts. Servo sent the kitchen a lot of meals that we would later bag, label, and freeze. One of the main items we would be processing was Turkey’s. The turkeys were not already carved so that was what we would be doing. One volunteer carved one of the Turkeys and then the shift leader asked me if I had ever carved one. I said no, but that I was willing to learn. Carving the turkey was weird, but I’d say a valuable learning experience. I was able to use my skills that night at Servo Thanksgiving. For…

Similar to last week’s Tuesday, Brook came today with music again. Because I expected the songs would be in Spanish, I was not as panic about not understanding much like last week, and she also translated some parts of the songs. We passed around bean bags while singing, and later on, moving around the room while passing the bean bags and singing. I think Brook was teaching the kids about keeping the beat while singing, and I was surprised that music can be taught in such way. I was used to instructing kids doing STEM activities and have thought of fun ways to teach STEM lessons back in high school. Seeing how a lesson in another subject…
